Removal & Reinstallation of the Gearbox + Clutch Kit Replacement – Škoda Scala (2020)
Our workshop received a 2020 Škoda Scala, which required a more extensive job: removing and reinstalling the gearbox together with replacing the clutch kit. When the car arrived, we checked the clutch pedal operation, the gearbox behavior during shifting, and the condition of the hydraulics to ensure the entire process would be carried out safely and efficiently.
This job also included one unique detail that influenced the work procedure itself and required extra care.
Below you’ll find a complete description of the repair and answers to the most common questions people search for regarding the clutch and gearbox.
On the Škoda Scala (2020), we first disconnected all components that prevent safe gearbox removal — including the starter, shift linkage, mounts/brackets, and electrical connectors. We then removed the gearbox from the vehicle to gain access to the clutch assembly.
We removed the old clutch and checked the condition of the flywheel, wear of the friction disc, the pressure plate, and the release bearing. After that, we installed a new clutch kit according to Škoda’s specifications and set everything up so the system operates smoothly and without vibrations.
After reinstallation, we refitted the gearbox, centered the clutch, connected the hydraulics, and carried out a road test to confirm proper clutch engagement and smooth shifting through all gears.
A correctly functioning clutch is essential for performance, comfort, and the long-term life of the gearbox — especially on the Scala, which is often driven in the city and exposed to frequent stop-and-go driving.

1. How can I tell the clutch needs replacing?
Common signs include clutch slipping during acceleration, higher engine revs without matching speed increase, a burning smell, a heavy or unusually soft pedal feel, shuddering when pulling away, or difficult gear changes. If any of these symptoms appear, it’s best to have the clutch inspected as soon as possible.
2. How long does a clutch usually last in a Škoda Scala?
Clutch life depends on driving style, operating conditions, and the vehicle’s overall condition. In most cars, replacement is typically needed after 100,000–180,000 km. Frequent city driving and stop-and-go traffic can shorten clutch life. For the Škoda Scala (2020), the manufacturer recommends regular checks at each major service interval.
3. What happens if I keep driving with a worn clutch?
A worn clutch can damage other components—such as the flywheel, gearbox, or hydraulic system. You may experience vibrations, shuddering, loss of power, and in the worst case, complete clutch failure that leaves the vehicle undrivable. Replacing the clutch in time greatly reduces the risk of expensive repairs.
After completing the work, we tested the Škoda Scala (2020) under different speeds and loads to confirm that the gearbox shifts precisely and the clutch operates smoothly. If your vehicle needs a professional clutch replacement or gearbox removal and refit, we’ll provide the same high level of care.
