Complete Vehicle Service and Suspension Check – Volvo V40 (2014)

A 2014 Volvo V40 arrived at our workshop for regular maintenance and a full vehicle inspection. The customer originally came in for routine service, but also wanted to understand the real condition of the car and what would need attention next.

With an older vehicle, the goal is not to replace as many parts as possible. The important part is to understand the actual condition first, separate urgent repairs from items that can be monitored, and only then decide on the next steps.

Oil, Filters and Fluids

The first part of the job was regular maintenance. The inspection showed that the car needed engine oil, all filters, and brake fluid replacement because the brake fluid was already outside the correct range.

We carried out:

  • engine oil replacement
  • oil filter replacement
  • air filter replacement
  • cabin filter replacement
  • operating fluid check
  • brake fluid replacement
  • basic vehicle condition check

Brake fluid is often underestimated, but it directly affects safety. If it is outside the acceptable range, replacement should not be delayed.

Alignment Only After Suspension Inspection

The owner also wanted wheel alignment. Before doing alignment, however, it always makes sense to inspect the full axle and suspension system. If the suspension has play or damaged parts, alignment alone will not solve the problem.

We checked:

  • front axle
  • rear axle
  • upper and lower control arms
  • bushing condition
  • alignment adjustment bolts
  • uneven wear
  • possibility of correct adjustment

The front suspension was in good condition. The issue appeared at the rear, where the upper and lower control arms had to be replaced on both sides.

New Arms and Bolts

During the rear axle inspection, we found that the bolts on the arms were heavily corroded. We replaced them together with the arms so the alignment could be adjusted correctly and the entire system would hold as it should.

At the rear, we handled:

  • replacement of upper rear arms
  • replacement of lower rear arms
  • replacement of corroded bolts
  • preparation for wheel alignment
  • checking the correct installation of new parts
  • final suspension inspection

This process matters. If alignment is performed on a suspension that is not in good condition, the result will not be accurate and the car may continue pulling to one side or wearing tires unevenly.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why check the suspension before wheel alignment?

Because alignment only makes sense if the arms, bushings, and other suspension parts are in good condition. If there is play in the suspension, adjustment will not solve the problem.

2. How can bad rear control arms be identified?

Signs can include uneven tire wear, reduced stability, knocking sounds, changes in vehicle behavior, or inability to set the alignment correctly.

3. Why replace the arm bolts as well?

If bolts are corroded, alignment may not be adjustable and the bolts can be damaged during future work. Replacing them helps ensure correct adjustment and secure fastening.

Conclusion

The 2014 Volvo V40 came in for regular service, but the inspection showed a wider scope of work. We replaced the engine oil, all filters, and brake fluid. Before the planned alignment, we inspected the suspension and found that the rear axle needed new upper and lower arms on both sides, including corroded bolts. The result is a car after specific maintenance and with a clear plan for the next step.
